Atlantic City shut down

I'm sure you've heard that our next neighbor New Jersey is having budget problems or something so bad that the casinos were closed down on Wednesday and continues today. That's a big loss in revenue. I'm not really that sad because a family member can't go down there. The man's been going down there weekly at least 2 times a week for about 8 yrs! That's too much. He says it gives him something to do, but I think it's an addiction. Once he referred to playing the slots as 'his job'. Is he kidding? He won $2,500 or so once. I think that's the most, so far. He's also slipped on the escalator the day before Sean's graduation and did get hurt. I go down once in a blue moon. I once won about $240 on a couple of pulls of the slot and then quit. I have no desire to throw money away that I could use for plants or eating out by using the 'computerized' slot machines. And someone who would rather go gamble then see his relatives has a problem.

I spent some time, years ago, in Atlantic City. Not to gamble - it was a rest stop on the way to Key West. I could not believe how incredibly poor the area just outside the casinos was - it was like a 3rd world country! After seeing that, there was no way I could toss money away gambling.

I can't believe they could actually close it, though...

There still are poor people who beg for money on the boardwalk. And there are cheesy parts to the city. I guess you could say that about any major city. The beaches are somewhat better and there are new outlet stores. They redid the mall, so we want to see that. I just like seeing the glitz and glam, but it's not a major attraction to me.

Wow, can't believe they've actually shut down the casinos!! I was there about 3 years ago and we stayed at one of the hotels on the boardwalk and didn't venture out further than that. I don't mind going to a casino once in a while (maybe twice a year) because I like to hang on to my money too much! lol Two years ago I won $1680.00 and walked out with it...bought my patio furniture, stereo system and a bunch of other stuff I wanted...no way was I giving it back to the casino by keeping playing!! Some do have a severe addiction to it, though, and lose their homes, etc because of it...very sad.
